An excellent place to visit for the energetic, during summer, is the Lake District.

Campsites abound, many have small shops where you can resupply and hot showers. 1:50,000 ordnance survey maps are perfect for hiking in the hills and are sold everywhere.

Penrith is on the main London to Scotland railway line and can be a good starting point for a spell in the hills.

The lakes themselves have various ways of killing time. Hiring canoes, small boats etc. Windamere and Coniston are the main ones but the smaller ones also have activities and are less crowded.
