Let's start at the bottom end. Coaches. Go to London Victoria tube stop, get to the National Express coach depot and from there onwards. All can be booked online. Cheap but slow.
Trains. I bloody hate them in England. Book early for cheap tickets. If you turn up and just want a quick journey they can hammer you (look into rail cards, have never tried it but it can't be any more expensive). Some services are quick and efficient, avoid rush hour like the plague. I have never found a way of getting tickets on line without tons of hassle registering this and that. Let us know if you manage.
Planes. You can whizz up and down England now very cheaply on planes. The cost can rival the trains and coaches if you get good deals.
