This is a favourite weekend getaway for the stressed people of Mumbai and Pune.
This hillstation was discovered by an englishman and you will still get to see the colonial era over here.
The British built a narrow gauge train to Matheran which still runs perfectly.
To go to Matheran one can take a train, either from Mumbai or Pune and get down at Neral Railway Station. From there you can either take the train which takes quite some time to reach the top meandering through the thick forests or you can hire a cab which will take less than an hour. Not recommended for people suffering from motion sickness casue the drivers don't believe in wasting time and speed up the gas through the ghats.
The best place to stay ther is 'LORDS'.One more thing, there are no taxis in Matheran.
You have to either walk or ride a horse.
well, i have never heard about Matheran....
