I am considering on taking a Yoga Retreat in Rishikesh, India. I am very nervous about traveling to India. However I think it would be an incredible experience! I would be traveling with a group of men and women. I have been researching the areas of India. I have read that northern India is dangerous for travelers. Does anyone have any info on this? Also, any information on the area would be appreciated. Part of the retreat is going to an area and volunteering some time with the local people. I would love to hear from anyone with experience with this as well.
Thank you.
Yoga is every where in India. And yes, Yoga Ashram, Rishikesh is very famous here.
Alternatively Sri Ravishankar's Art Of Living program Which is again based on Yoga is also famous.
North India being dangerous is mainly due to the fact that there have been reports of sexual molestation quite for some time now.
people here can easily misunderstand the traveler's friendliness, as signs for sexual relationship ... No offense to North Indians intended

, I meant only illliterate North Indians.
Well i think yoga is very famous in kerala. In Kerala you can see lot of yoga institutes. Asoka Beach Resort is one of the famous institutes in Kerala. I don't know about North Indian Institutes But i can say its very famous in south india.
If You Do go to India these are a few things you should remember. Number one never wear jewelry in public. Number two if you buy something from a store count your money and your change. And finally don't take anything from anybody from food to drinks. Also I say you should take Yoga in India it is very popular and if you have time on your hands and see a fast food resturant check it out because there isn't much junkfood.
The Yoga ashram in Rishikesh is superb. It is a must visit for Yoga lovers. As far as being unsafe is concerned, there are certain basic precautions one must take otherwise no place in the world is safe. The basics one must know like not going to lonely places at night and move in group.
I was noticed that there are different kind of yoga and not only available in India . Can anyone tell me what their differences are?
The only person who can explain about yoga would be a yoga guru. Yoga basically deals with stretching and exercising your muscles and improving your breathing and concentration. I have given it a shot a couple of times but sadly i always end up spending more time in searching for yoga institutes than practising yoga. If you could inculcate it in your daily life like practising a few asanas every morning and the like then it can be very beneficial. Also these days there is no single spot where you can learn yoga. If you are having second thoughts on going to Rishikesh visit some of the Yog Shibirs or Yoga camps organized by Swami Ramdev at various cities in india. Usually a camp lasts for a week or so and you can easily synchronize your travel with the days the camp is held.
Well, it can be a bit risky going alone anywhere in Rishikesh/Haridwar, the amount of risk, if you consider, is nothing compared to the presence these places have. If you want to do yoga its not necessary that you need to go to these places but then a visit is always worth. Try staying in a group, refrain from giving alms to beggars, avoid moving out after sunset and you'll be safe
can anyone tell me what are the benefit when we do yoga and i saw there is a lot of type of yoga there is soft and hard and so on
